GREEN

Dodie Messer Meeks

If you are up high enough
Tower
High rise
Campanile
Plane gliding in
If you look out and down
Houston is green.

All of it cushiony
Mansions and shrubbery
Sculptures and sprinklers
Houston is green.

Somewhere down under there
Are boarded up windows
Bodies in bayous
Bail bondsmen
Guns for sale
Jobless guys drinking.

But, my friend, most of it,
I want to say all of it,
Fate, chance, kings,
Desperate men,
If you can get up high enough
It spreads out
A tapestry
Eight shades of green.
